| Excursion to Plovdiv and Bachkovo Monastery |
Plovdiv is also one of the oldest European towns contemporary to Troya and Mikena. It has been existing as a settlement about 8000 years ago, and became a town 3000 years ago during the Troyan war. It was the capital of Ancient Thrace and a big trade centre in the Middle Ages. In the historic quarter of the city you will see beautifully decorated period houses, the ancient fortress-wall, the Roman forum and stadium and magnificent churches. In the afternoon we will visit also Bachkovo Monastery - the second largest in Bulgaria. It was founded in 1083 by the Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin, Grigorii Bakuriani and his brother Abazii. |
