On 28 February 2009, there was the opening of the annual wine-tasting exhibition known as Wine Salon of the Czech Republic. In the historic cellar of the Valtice State Castle, visitors may sample the new collection of the 100 best wines from Bohemia and Moravia. A record-breaking 492 wines were entered in this year’s premier competition from 114 domestic wine- producing companies.  The wines were evaluated by 20 top wine tasters. Among the most successful this year were Chardonnay, Rhine Riesling (Ryzlink rýnský) and Palava among the white grape varieties and Blaufränkisch (Frankovka), Dornfelder and Saint Lawrence (Svatovavřinecké) among the red grape varieties. A medal with the logo “2009 Wine Salon of the Czech Republic” on the label of a wine bottle will advise a customer that the wine from the respective wine grower was chosen among the 100 best in the Czech Republic.
