Staré Hrady castle was opened to visitors . The first written reference to the castle comes from 1340. The gothic castle, which bears the hallmarks of the architect Petr Parléř, has been extended with a renaissance chateau and the surrounding area presents a unique renaissance complex with figural sgraffiti. The circular tour includes the exhibition “Life under the Emperor Franz Joseph I”, which presents the life of ordinary people, townsmen and nobility in the premises of the castle and chateau, with furniture and many thousands of collection items. There is an educational trail in the extensive cellars called “Back to the time of fairy tales”, which is intended for children and adults alike. Here, 100 fairy-tale creatures, dwarfs and little ghouls come alive in the fairy tale of magic grandfather Fábulín. The Safari exhibition presents the African expeditions, life and work of Josef Vágner, the founder of the Safari ZOO in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, as well as live animals, an African camp and authentic images from safaris.
It is also an important European location within the Natura 2000 network, as there is a colony of lesser horseshoe bats in the castle grounds.
