The town of Polička is a picturesque historical town, founded in 1265 by King Přemysl Otakar II. We meet up with history almost every step of the way when walking around the town. Under the reign of Charles IV, massive stone ramparts, which encircle the whole historical centre of the town to this very day, were established at a length of 1,220 m. The Polička fortifications are some of the most fully preserved town fortifications in the Czech Republic and in Central Europe. This monument is of course attractive for tourists and visitors to the town, who can take advantage of a guided tour along a walkway on the renovated part of the ramparts.
Renovation and renewal of the ring of ramparts is still underway. The decanal Church of St. Jacob is a dominant symbol of the town. The Church of St. Jacob has become world-famous not only for its architecture, but especially due to it being the birthplace of the composer Bohuslav Martinů, who was born in a room in the church tower on 8 December 1890. Polička offers tourists the really unique possibility of viewing the room where B. Martinů was born in the church tower, and the reward for ascending the steps to the tower is an exceptionally beautiful view over the town and its surrounding area. In 2010, the Church of St. Jacob with the room where B. Martinů was born was declared a national cultural monument. |
