Route: Banska Bystrica - Spania Dolina - Orava Castle - Banska Bystrica

Our first stop we will make at the Spania Dolina which is Monument Reserve of Popular Architecture and consists of a unique set of miner houses built of wood and stones. The former mining village is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Slovakia. Copper and silver ores were mined here in the past. The majority of preserved houses are from the 19th century. The tall tower of the church of Conversion of the Lord built on Romanesque foundations dominates the wonderful panorama. In order to reach the fortified church, one can choose to climb 160 stairs of a roofed staircase. The entrance is situated in a little park with the Renaissance building of the former klopačka (knocker) from the 16th century. In the area of Klopačka, precious expositions from the history of this unique location can be found. The old water main is also a precious technical monument. The locally produced bobbin lace is also sought after. Next we will visit to the Orava Castl which In 1370, it became a county castle and the seat of the Orava Castle estate, which included almost the whole region of Orava. The castle, much like others in Slovakia, stands on the site of old wooden forts and it was constructed after the Tartar invasion in 1241. Originally, it was built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles and later reconstructed in the Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. It consists of several buildings copying the shape of the castle rock. In 1556, the Castle fell into the hands of the Thurzos' who were the authors of the most extensive reconstruction of the castle's history. The Orava castle acquired its present form in 1611. Today the Castle is a remarkable compound of buildings of the lower, central and upper castles with palaces, fortifications and towers. Visitors are intrigued by its three entrance gates communicated by a tunnel, under which there is a dungeon. After we will return to Banska Bystrica.
