Route: Cluj-Napoca - Deva - Hunedoara - Densus - Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa - Cluj-Napoca
Duration: 10 h
We depart from Cluj-Napoca in the morning we cross the Carpathians, we arrive to Deva, where you will see the ruins of the fortress set on the top of a volcanic hill. The view from the fortress is remarkable. Next stop is Hunedoara, the hometown of Joannes Corvinus (Ioan de Hunedoara). In the 14th century he was the governor of Transylvania, an important military leader, and the greatest fighter against the Ottomans of his time. His castle is the biggest Gothic civil building in southeastern Europe. We’ll have the opportunity to visit Corvins’ Castle from the council room to the torture chamber. After we will drive to one of the oldest and most bizarre churches in the country. It is situated in Densuş, a small village, close to the antique Dacian and Roman settlements. This is the reason why most of the material used to build this church, comes from antique pagan temples. The interesting fact is that the old Roman (marble/stone) gods and tombstones are standing right next to Christian icons and frescoes. Our lust stop will be in Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa – this was the full name of the ancient capital build by Romans at the beginning of the 2nd century, after they’ve conquered more than half of today Romania. We will enter the main gate and walk next to the old paved road to reach the center of the fortification. The visit is spectacular: one can view very well conserved ruins of a solar calendar, of religious temples (used for human sacrifices) and of other administrative and private buildings . After we will back to Cluj-Napoca.
