Route: Dusseldorf - Broich castle - Essen - Zeche Zollverein - Villa Hugel - Dusseldorf
Duration: 9 h
Our first stop in this tour we will make at the Broich Castle, which was originally erected to protect the town of Mülheim from invasion by the the Normans in the late 9th century. It is probably the oldest, still maintained Carolingian fortification in German-speaking Europe. The abandoned castle was rebuilt and expanded by the noblemen of Broich in the end of the 11th century. The castle survived a long and eventful history, including bloody feuds, wars, occupation and destruction.Over 200 years ago, Broich’s most famous guest stayed there -  Luise, Queen of Prussia - as the castle was owned by her grandmother. Nowadays, history buffs feel as if they have travelled back to a different time, especially when they enter the historical museum in the high castle, which in turn is bordered by the original ring wall. Documents, paintings, models, weapons and excavated finds bear witness to the different epochs. The “Luise room” is dedicated to the most important personality from the castle’s history, Prussian Queen Luise, who strolled around and lived in the castle in her youth from 1787 to 1791. Next we will visit to Essen, which is Germany’s third-greenest city in the heart oft the Ruhr region. Our city tour will offer everything that makes Essen special. As well as the Zollverein UNESCO world heritage site, Lake Baldeney, the Old Synagogue and the Margarethenhöhe garden city, there are highlights such as the new Krupp belt or the Folkwang museum.  Also we will visit to  founded 1200 years ago by Frisian missionary Liudger, Werden is the oldest district in the city of Essen. The St. Ludgerus basilica with its famous treasure chamber, the abbey residence, today the seat of the renowned Folkwang University of arts, the Lucius church with wall paintings from the 12th century and the historic homes and alleyways which give this area its own special charm. Next we will visit to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex was awarded the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most impressive industrial monuments on the planet. Since the final working shift in 1986, Zollverein has been transformed into a prime site for the art, culture and creative sectors, attracting more than two million visitors a year. This building symbolises the structural change in the Ruhr metropolis like no other. Along with its sheer size, the architecture of the Zollverein complex is simply magnificent – it’s not for nothing that the Zollverein is also called the most beautiful coal mine in the world. The celebrated twin-trestle winding tower is the most famous emblem of the Ruhr district, and a symbol for the industrial heritage of an entire region. Former miners guide visitors through the mine’s pithead facilities and coking plant, leading them past huge machines standing idle and whisking them off to times of yore with true stories from the pit. Outside, the beautiful winding tower of Shaft XII rises into the air with its impressive "New Objectivity" style. In other buildings, modern art galleries, exhibition halls, and restaurants have turned old spaces into recreational and cultural areas. With a swimming pool and an ice skating rink, you can enjoy visiting Zollverein all year round. Next we will visit to the Villa Hugel ,which is a symbol of German industrialisation. The Villa Hugel has 269 rooms and 8,100 square metres of usable floor space, beautifully situated within splendid park overlooking Lake Baldeney, the Villa is far more than merely the residence of an industrial magnate.Villa Hügel, erected between 1870 and 1873 by Alfred Krupp (1812–1887), was intended as a residence and refuge for Krupp and his family. It provided a suitable stately frame for the Krupp company’s representation, receptions, and festivities. The building is based on his own sketches and plans of Alfried Krupp. Functional criteria were given precedence over the form and appearance of the building. The Krupp Historical Archive has been housed in the Small House since 1955. It is the oldest company archive in Germany and possesses extensive documents and important collections of historical industrial photographs and films. After we return to Dusseldorf.
