Our first stop in this tour will be at town of Nyon. The spick-and-span little town of Nyon is situated on Lake Geneva, half way between Geneva and Lausanne, amid the vineyards of La Côte. Many excavations and sights from the times of the Celtic Helvetians and the Romans, and from the Middle Ages, bear witness to its eventful history. Since it was built in the 13th century, it has had several functions: the fortified home of nobles, the Counts of Savoy, Bernese administrators, a court house, a municipal council meeting hall, and it finally became a museum in 1860. It was also used as a prison. From the 13th century, the Counts of Savoy began building a mighty castle on top of Roman ruins, dominated by five huge towers. Nowadays this castle, towering over the Old Town, houses the Museum of History and Porcelain, containing valuable items from the former porcelain manufacturing industry in Nyon. From the 16th century onwards, the town was ruled by Berne, and a reminder of this can be seen in the arcades around the market square. Three Corinthian columns on a little hill in the parkland by the lake recall the Roman era. After Julius Caesar had conquered Gaul, he decided to establish the colony of Iulia Equestris with Noviodunum as its urban centre on the site of the present town of Nyon, as shown by the artefacts from excavations on display in the Roman Museum.ral features.After visit to the castle of Nyon we will drive to Geneva. During the city tour of Geneva you will visit old Geneva and see the reputed Conservatory of Music, the Grand-Theatre (Opera), the Rath Museum, the Statue of general Guillaume Henri Dufour and the monument of Henry Dunant, the five meters high Reformation Wall in the Bastions Park, the old Arsenal,with it's murals on the inner wall and frescoes along the outer rim of the arcade, the Saint Peter's Cathedral, Place du Bourg-de-Four, famous street Rue de Rhone, the Flower Clock and Geneva’s lakefront, with unforgattable view on giant water fountain Jet d'eau, the symbol of Geneva. After free time we will return to Lausanne.
