Route: Leipzig - Colditz Castle - Freiberg - Terra Mineralia - Hubertusburg castle - Leipzig
Duration: 11 h
Our first stop we will make at the Colditz Castle which dates back to the middle ages and was first built around 1200 and was initially used as a lookout post for the German emperors.  There had been numerous attacks and fires, (one started by a baker’s apprentice!) which has meant the castle has been reconstructed several times.  The baker incident in 1504 led to large amounts of reconstruction and even the addition of a wild animal park around it.   Around this time it was also turned in to a hunting lodge by Elector August I and his wife Anne the Princess of Denmark and they also carried out extensive building work to extend the castle. The latter was for the wealthy germans and that period lasted for almost 100 years until after the first world war and the Nazis came into power in Germany. Colditz is most famous for it’s use in the second world war as a prisoner of war camp. Next we will visit to Freiberg which has one of the best preserved historic town centres in the state, and is known for its cathedral and centuries-old mining tradition. It is seat of the Bergakademie TU Freiberg, the second oldest technical university still in existence. Freiberg was founded in the 1160s, on the northeastern slopes of the Saxon Ore Mountains. It became the biggest city and prime trading centre in the Margraviate of Meissen (precursor of the state of Saxony) during the high Middle Ages. Freiberg (the name means "Free Mountain") may live in the shadow of two larger Saxon cities, Dresden and Leipzig, but its importance to the wealth and development of Saxony--and especially of Dresden--can't be overstated. Without "the Silver City of Saxony" and the mines of the Erzgebirge or Ore Mountains, the Electors of Saxony wouldn't have been able to indulge their passion for art, architecture, music, and theatre. Even though much of Freiberg's wealth was sucked away by royals like Augustus the Strong, there were enough riches left over to pay for a rebuilt Freiberg St. Marien Cathedral,  an impressive Rathaus or town hall, a Stadtheater, Freudenstein Castle, a technical university of mining, and other additions to the medieval town during the silver industry's heyday from the 1500s to the late 1800s. There we also visit to Terra Mineralia is a collection of more than 3,500 objects that range from geodes to gems to meteorites. The exhibition is designed as a "mineralogical journey around the world," with visitors moving from continent to continent as they explore the collection. The museum also has exhibits on the cultural role of gems, minerals in everyday life, and the science behind the color and appearance of minerals and gemstones. Next we will visit to the Hubertusburg Castle, named after the patron saint of the hunt, which represents one of the most advanced achievements of Saxon Baroque architecture. It is the largest and formerly most magnificent lodges in Europe. The complex was built by Lieutenant Colonel Johann Christoph Naumann (1664 - 1742), who enriched the art history of the state with numerous buildings in the Saxon region, among others in Leipzig and Bautzen. Between 1739 and 1751, a reconstruction of the main building of the castle was carried out under the direction of the ingenious Oberland master builder Johann Knöffel. It is his last building and may be considered one of his most important works. A large number of important artists were involved in the design of Hubertusburg, for example the sculptors Lorenzo Mattielli, Benjamin Thomae and Gottfried Knöffel, the painters JB Grone, JA Pöppelmann, Chr. WE Dittrich, or the painter theorist A. F. Oeser. There we will visit to the Catholic parish church of St. Hubertus (former court chapel) is worth seeing, as it is the only room with the original furnishings in the entire castle. The chapel occupies the complete left half of the main wing of the castle with a total height of three stories. Arched arcades inside support the galleries. They complete the chapel nave in a semi-circle with a niche for the altar. The gallery above this small vestibule provides space for the organ, and the one opposite holds the Royal Chapel along the entire width of the interior. You will be surprised by the white and red marbled walls with their richly decorated gilded decoration. It is not marble, but artificial stucco marble (plaster, lime, sand). The production art was carried out in Italy. Italian artists and stuccoers worked here. The former court chapel is dedicated to Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of the hunters. After we return to Leipzig.
