Firstly we will make stop at the Historisches Museum und Bach-Gedenkstätte which is since 1997 the Historical Museum with the Bach Memorial is located in the Koethen Castle. The exhibition was established in this historical location in appreciation of the activity of Johann Sebastian Bach as the court music director of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Koethen in the years 1717 to 1723. It is housed on the first floor of the Ludwig-Bau, in the former living rooms of the princesses and includes four subject areas like the potentate gallery, the princely residence of Koethen at the time of Bach and of the Bach family in Koethen, the musical work of Bach during his time in Koethen and Prince Leopold and the Muses. The “Hall of Mirrors” opens up to the visitor via the Bach Memorial. The magnificent room in the late Classical dècor provides the setting for the Koethen Bach Festival, pianist and viola competitions, the “Koethen Autumn,” chamber concerts, and other festive events. It also forms a part of the tour through the castle. Next we will visit to Wörlitz, a charming little German town in Saxony-Anhalt, has a history of more than 1.000 years. It became famous in the second half of the eighteenth century when one of the earliest and certainly most beautiful landscape parks of Continental Europe was formed here in the direct vicinity of the town. From the very beginning the garden was open to the public, serving not only as a place for recreation but primarily for education. The Wörlitz Park is part of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in November 2000. The whole Garden Kingdom is situated in the midst of the Biosphere Reserve of the Middle Elbe River. As an addition to the walk through the Park, a boat trip on the Wörlitz Lake and the canals is highly recommendable. A gondola ride is especially favourable for visitors who have problems with walking longer distances. After free time we return to Leipzig.
