Route: Linz - Monastery of Sankt-Florian - Christkindl - Steyr - Enns - Linz
Duration: 8 h
This tour is only for Christmastime, from 1-st December till 1- st February. Firstly we will visit to the Monastery of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine’s Order at St. Florian  which is a place of meeting and devotion, the cultural centre of the region and a treasure of the Austrian Baroque. Particularly noteworthy are the library housing more than 150,000 volumes, the Imperial Marble Hall, the Sebastian Altar by Albrecht Altdorfer, the crypt with the sarcophagus of Anton Bruckner, and the “Bruckner Organ” in the collegiate basilica. The St. Florian Monastery is known far beyond the borders of Austria as a place of pilgrimage. Saint Florian is said to be buried here. The famous composer Anton Bruckner also found his final resting place in the crypt. The monastery was first documented in 819. Since 1071 Canons Regular of Saint Augustine's order have been living there. Over the centuries the monastic building has adapted to the many changes in style. In parallel, the borough of St. Florian became a well-known place in Europe. In this tour, you will see the library, the marble hall, the Altdorf Gallery, the collegiate basilica, the "Bruckner Organ" and the sarcophagus of Anton Bruckner.  Our next stop we will make in the tiny town of Christkindl, known for its church, religious artifacts, and post office, and is especially popular at Christmastime. As legend has it, Ferdinand Sertl who suffered from epilepsy visited the area in the winter of 1691, carrying a small statue of the Christ Child. He placed the statue in a niche he had cut in a pine tree and prayed for relief from his illness. His health did improve and local people hearing of his "miraculous cure" visited the area and soon it became a seasonal center for pilgrims. In 1708, Abbot Anselm Angerer had the pilgrimage church you see today erected at the site. The original pine tree trunk can still be seen in the altar. Today, the place is world famous for its purpose-built temporary Christmas post office that opens its door every year by late November and answers innumerable letters from children. A perfect way to get in the right mood for Christmas is to admire the elaborate mechanical Steyr Crèche and the elaborate Pöttmesser Crib.  The visitors purchase the stamp that is only available in Christkindl, only authentic on an envelope with the post office’s seal. Next we will visit the city of Steyr is picture-perfect with pastel-hued buildings lightly dusted with the first layers of snowfall. The extra layer of advent comes with the traditional Christmas market in the old town, where you can sip on locally brewed Glühwein while being mesmerised by the colourful and intricately detailed facades of the blending late-Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, some still with their original wooden triangular roofs. Running through the market area is the main street of Grünmarkt and it is here that you can visit the former printing house of Joseph Greis who produced a songbook in 1928 that first documented Silent Night in written form, and which was multiplied and sold. The pamphlet, called ‘Four Beautiful New Christmas Carols’ is said to likely be the oldest printed version of the world-famous Christmas song.  This demonstration print shop is housed in the original site, where you can print your very own copy of Silent Night on the original printing machine dating back to the 19th century. There we will visit to the first Austrian Christmas Museum in Steyr will display a replica of the first text print of “Silent Night”. The first Austrian Christmas Museum and train are a must-see during advent season and features over 14,000 antique Christmas decorations dating from 1830 to 1945 from Elfriede Kreuzberger’s collection, alongside 200 dolls. The train rides across three floors to what is known as the ‘Angel Workshop’ and is a themed train ride you will never forget. After free time at the christmas market we will drive to the city Enns which was one of the first places in Austria to receive town privileges and where we will make a short stop. Leopold VI, Duke of Austria, endowed Enns with town privileges in 1212, it is now considered Austria's oldest town. The landmark of Enns, the belfry (Town Tower) on the Main Square, was erected between 1564 and 1568 as a bell tower, watch and clock tower during the reign of emperor Maximilian II. The town charter dates to 22 April 1212, the document is displayed at the local museum. The date is also depicted on the Town Tower. After we will return to Linz.
