Route: Seville - Monastery De San Isidoro Del Campo - Italica - Aracena - Cave of Wonders - Seville
Duration: 9 h
The first stop in our tour will be at the San Isidoro del Campo monastery was founded in 1301 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán and María Alonso Coronel in a place near the Itálica ruins, where, based on tradition, Saint Isidore of Seville was said to be buried and, ever since, it has been under the spiritual and temporary management of different religious orders – Cistercian, Hieronymite hermits, Saint Jerome’s Order, etc. – which have left their mark on both the construction as well as the embellishment of the building.  In this unique fortress-monastery, with a double church, the Gothic style is juxtaposed with clear Languedoc and Mudejar influences, where the Almohad tradition is clearly visible. Unlike Cistercian austerity, the Hieronymite monastery is decorated with murals that make up what is possibly one of the most outstanding ensembles in Spain. After we will reach the Italica which was the birthplace of three Roman emperors - Trajan, Hadrian, and possibly Theodosius. One of the earliest Roman settlements in Spain, it was founded in 206 BC by Publius Cornelius Scipius to house legionaries after the battle of Ilipa, which saw the Carthaginians (from North Africa) were defeated. The town rose to high social and military status in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, when Trajan and his nephew Hadrian were in power. Hadrian named the town, which had a population of 8,000, Colonia Aelia Augusta Italica. The area was a major producer of grain and olive oil, and some families with private farms became very wealthy exporting to Rome. Guided tour of the theater and the Itálica archaeological site. First Roman city of the peninsula and cradle of the emperors Trajan and Adriano. We will visit its ancient streets where we will discover amazing mosaics, the Roman theater discovered in the middle of the 20th century, the ancient major thermal baths and its famous amphitheater, one of the largest in the Roman world where the gladiatorial fights took place. After we will drive to Aracena.Aracena is considered one of the most emblematic towns in Huelva province. From the passion and historic charm to the rich cuisine and the cultural exquisiteness of its Museo del Jamón, from the natural surroundings of the Sierra de Aracena to the spectacular Gruta de las Maravillas and the Interpretation Centre dedicated to the mycology; Aracena is one of the most charming towns in Andalucia. The origin pat of Aracena is at the top of the hill occupied by the Castle and the Priory Church. In medieval times it was a fortified town, defended by a stone wall and the fortress. Archaeological remains from the 10th-13th centuries have been found in this location, which are evidence of an Al-Andalus town related to the Qatrasana settlement documented in Islamic texts. The interior Aracena Castle contains dwellings from the Al-Andalus era and a number of buildings from the medieval fortress. Also we will visit to Gruta de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders). This natural underground monument is situated in the old centre of Aracena, under the hill crowned by the medieval castle and Priory Church of la Señora del Mayor Dolor, and has been open since 1914.  Because of its spectacular scenery, Las Maravillas Cave has been used as a location for many movies, both Spanish and foreign, most famously ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ (1959), the Hollywood blockbuster directed by Henry Levin, as well as ‘Faustina’ (1957), by José Luis Sáez Heredia; ‘Tarzán in King Solomon’s Mines (1973) by José Luis Merino, and ‘Yerma’ (1999), by Pilar Távora. During our wisit you will can explore the city and touch to its  history. After the visit we will return to Seville.
