Route: Strasbourg - Haut-Koenigsbourg castle - Eguisheim - Colmar - Boat trip - Strasbourg
Duration: 8 h
Firstly we will stop in this tour at Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle , where immerse yourself in the universe of the Middle Ages. It’s the only medieval castle in Alsace that has been fully restored. Towering at almost 800 metres, Haut-Koenigsbourg boasts an exceptional panoramic view. From the Grand Bastion, you can see the Alsace plain, the Vosges, the Black Forest and on a clear day, the Alps… Built in the 12th century, the castle bore witness to nine centuries of European conflicts and rivalries between feudal lords, kings and emperors. As soon as you arrive at the base of the castle, you’ll be impressed by the stature of this exceptional monument. In front of the ramparts, you’ll feel as if time has come to a standstill. Drawbridges, walls, towers and keeps: everything you’d imagine about medieval architecture takes form before your eyes. Once you’ve passed the high gate, you’ll walk through the lower courtyard with its inn, blacksmith’s shop and mill, to the spiral staircase leading directly to the furnished residence of the lord of the castle. A unique journey to the heart of everyday life in a medieval castle. Next we will stop at Eguisheim adorable Alsace town filled with colorful half-timbered buildings. The winding, cobbled streets of Eguisheim are lined with traditional medieval half-timbered buildings, brightly painted as are many of the buildings in Alsace. There are also fountains, flowers and ...the storks for which the town is well known. It is of course because of this charm that Eguisheim is now listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France. The village is also holder of the prestigious 4* ville fleuri award (the highest award) for its town garden planting and is full of flowers in the summer. Start your visit by wandering along the Rue du Rempart Sud - as soon as you reach the entrance to the street you see a charming dovecote that brings a picture postcard beauty. Next walk up the Grand Rue in Eguisheim where you can see a selection of manor houses, inns and other houses all painted the blues, yellows, pinks and greens so typical of Alsace. A little further along and you will reach the Place du Chateau with its chateau, church, colourful houses, fountain and ... storks! There are lots of small delights that you will come across as you explore the town including the 8th century Eguisheim castle, birthplace of Pope St Leo IX (1002 - 1054) and with an outer wall that dates back to 720 AD . Also you will see the little church next to the chateau , colourful manor houses in Eguisheim: the Unterlindenhof dates back to 1051 and others to between 1200 and 1600, two Renaissance fountains and the Church of Saint-Peter and Saint-Paul which has both Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements and more... Our next stop will be at Colmar. Described by Frommer’s as ‘one of the most attractive towns in Alsace’, Colmar is situated in east-central France, in a border region that was once disputed between France and Germany. The city is renowned for its well preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks and its museums, among which is the Unterlinden Museum with the Isenheim Altarpiece. Our tour will lead you to the “Maison des Tetes”, an outstanding German Renaissance building and to the Little Venice neighborhood where gorgeous half timbered houses are lined along the Lauch River. Other significant landmarks include the Koifhus, the Pfister house, Saint Martin church, the Unterlinden Museum that houses world famous Isenheim Altarpiece, the covered market and so much more… In Colmar we will take a boat rip in “Little Venice” which is a picturesque area in the heart of the old city through which flows a quiet river called the Lauch. You will discover its lovely, authentic landscape on a flat-bottomed boat and be charmed by this original view of Colmar. After we will return to Strasbourg.
