Route: Stuttgart - Esslingen - Hohenneuffen Castle - Bad Urach - Residenzschloss Urach - Stuttgart
Duration: 9 h
Our first stop in this tour we will make at the Esslingen am Neckar where over the stone Pleinsau bridge (one of the oldest in Germany), you have started your journey back in time. The old Pleinsau Gate nearby — which all traffic had to pass through to enter the town — dominates one side of town. The defensive Burg (castle) and old city walls retain their ancient effect on the other.  Heading next over the Inner Bridge (which looks more like a street really), you will find a small chapel perched mid way. These buildings are common on older bridges throughout Germany and are all dedicated to St Nicolaus — the patron saint of skippers and rafters. As you stroll further into the center of the old town you will find a myriad of streets and houses dating back to medieval times.  Nearby, you can still find the majestic Stadkirche (town church) dating from the 9th century declaring the towns Marktplatz as the center of the community. Strohstraße (Straw Street) and Hafenmarkt (Potters Market) are both used for festivals and theater throughout the year. One of the many highlights is most certainly the Old Town Hall with its unique and beautiful Renaissance facade or the view of the Esslingen "Burg" (castle) which towers majestically above the town. Also in the Esslingen located the Kessler wine cellar. The vineyards in Esslingen have long tradition, so no wonder that the Kessler sparkling wine has been already produced here for 190 years. With that, Esslingen and Kessler wine cellar is the German’s oldest sparkling wine producer. Next we will visit to the remains of one of the greatest elevated fortresses in Southern Germany lie high above the town of Neuffen and offer a breathtaking view of the enchanting cultural landscape of Württemberg. At a height of 743 m, strategically situated on the white Jurassic crag of the same name, which rises up from the Albtrauf, the Hohenneuffen fortress ruins offers an impressive view of the surrounding idyllic valleys. The earliest fortress construction on the Hohenneuffen dates back to the 11th century. The fortress, first mentioned in a document in 1198, was in the possession of the von Neuffen free nobles, the most famous scion of which was the minnesinger Gottfried von Neuffen. In 1301, the fortress fell into the possession of the Württemberg Dynasty, even becoming their residence for several years in the mid-15th century. In the 16th century, Hohenneuffen was turned into a fortress, one of seven strongholds for the defence of the state. The fortifications were built in accordance with contemporary military technology. The three round bastions that held the artillery, and the upper ramparts, which are over three metres high, continue to define Hohenneuffen's appearance in the present day. Next we will visit to Bad Urach lets you experience the UNESCO biosphere reserve at first hand. The "Swabian Jungle" refers to the ravine forests that cover the slopes of Urach's tributary valleys. This unique type of woodland is found on dry, sunny detrital slopes or in shady, damp ravines. While enjoying a stroll through the centre of town, visitors can admire the many smart, timbered buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries and the Late Medieval palace. Next we will visit to Urach Residential Palace, situated at the edge of the Swabian Alps, is the Württemberg region’s only remaining late Medieval residential palace. Modelled on the Altes Schloss (old castle) in Stuttgart, the palace complex in Urach was built in the early 15 th century as the home of Count Ludwig I von Württemberg, at a time when the county was divided. After reunification of Württemberg in 1482, the palace became a well-frequented residence and hunting lodge for the Dukes of Württemberg. Duke Carl Eugen (1728 – 1793) enjoyed staying in Urach, where he would host grand hunting expeditions. The interiors of the palace bear witness to the preferences and pastimes of its residents, for example the Dürnitz a type of large hall), the Palmensaal (hall of palms) and, in particular, the unique Goldener Saal. This is the only preserved Renaissance hall built for the Duchy of Württemberg, and one of Germany’s most spectacular Renaissance ballrooms. An extraordinary highlight of the palace is the exhibition of sledges belonging to the Württemberg State Museum. Featuring 22 ornate Baroque sledges from the 17 th to 19 th centuries, it is the largest collection of its kind in the world. After we return to Stuttgart.
