Route: Stuttgart - Solitude castle - Rastatt Favorite Palace - Residential Palace - Palais Thermal - Stuttgart
Duration: 11 h
Our first short stop we will make at the Solitude Palace, which is Duke Carl Eugen’s most ambitious and most personal creation. An impressive architectural ensemble and spectacular views make it exceptional. Planning for the hunting lodge and summer residence commenced in 1763. It was conceived as a lavish palace complex with extensive, almost endless gardens, a game park and woodland. The interior of the palace radiates splendour and is designed in the late Rococo and early Neoclassical styles. The main building, an exceptionally charming pavilion at the centre of the complex, with decorative and intricate rooms, has been well preserved. Its highlight is the White Hall (Weisse Saal) beneath the domed roof. Next we will visit to Rastatt Favorite Palace which is the oldest German “porcelain palace” and the only one to survive almost unchanged to this day. Its opulent interiors, extensive collections and idyllic setting lend it Europewide significance. This enchanting Baroque summer residence and hunting palace was built from 1710 to 1727 for the young Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden. At Favorite Palace, which is just a short carriage ride from Rastatt Residential Palace, the court met for festivities involving hunting, concerts and banquets. No expense was spared on the palace interiors, which are replete with all forms of 18th century craftsmanship: colourful scagliola floors made from imitation marble, walls with faience tiles, ceilings adorned with plasterwork and frescoes, sumptuous embroidered tapestries and priceless furniture. As well as demonstrating Sibylla Augusta’s exquisite taste, this opulence served to portray her as a refined and cultured ruler. The jewel in the crown is the Florentiner Kabinett (Florentine room), which is still in its original condition and the only one of its kind in Europe. 758 panels cover the walls in a kaleidoscope of colour. Crafted from marble, granite and semiprecious stones, with breathtaking perfection, each panel is a work of art in its own right. To accompany the magnificent décor, Sibylla Augusta amassed an unparalleled collection of Asian and European porcelain, glass and faience – earning the title “porcelain palace”. The building is surrounded by a charming English-style landscape park. In the Margravine’s day, the gardens featured tree-lined avenues, symmetrical parterres with fountains and orangeries. Some of these Baroque garden features have survived, making a stroll through the park a delightful exercise. Next we will visit to Rastatt Residential Palace which is the first Baroque residence on the Upper Rhine. The palace, gardens and town were planned as a whole, to create an impression of elegant, perfectly-proportioned uniformity – with the palace commanding pride of place at the centre. In 1700, a few years after construction had started on a hunting palace at Rastatt, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden decided that it should be expanded. Envisioning a grand residence modelled on Versailles, he commissioned an Italian architect, Domenico Egidio Rossi, who had previously worked for the Viennese nobility. After the margrave’s early death in 1707, his young widow Sibylla Augusta took over the reins of government. During her 20 years in power, she oversaw the completion of the palace complex and its sumptuous interiors. Rastatt Residential Palace is the epitome of a Baroque residence designed to display the might of an absolutist monarch: the visitor must first cross an expansive cour d’honneur, or grand courtyard, surrounded by an imposing three-wing complex. The roof of the main building, the corps de logis, is surmounted by a golden statue of Jupiter brandishing a thunderbolt.  Decorated with plasterwork, the two staircases at the rear of the court d’honneur lead to the centrepiece of the extensive main building: the Festsaal (banqueting hall). On either side of the banqueting hall, overlooking the gardens, are the state rooms, which are lavishly embellished with plasterwork and frescoes. Next we will reach the Wellness "Palais Thermal" in  Bad Wildbad. The healing thermalwater waters of Bad Wildbad are famous beyond the borders for its beneficial properties. The Palais Thermal is not only one of the “oldest wellness areas, it is also one of the most exclusive and most distinctive bathing and sauna areas in Europe” Every day, about twelve liters per second from the spring are transported to the earth’s surface at a temperature of about 35 to 42 ° Celsius. According to the recognized German “Classification for medicinal waters”, the thermal water is called the fluoride-containing sodium-calcium-chloride-bicarbonate acratotherm. Enjoy insights into a breathtaking spa, as it could not be more impressive. The complex includes the 10 thermal water pools 32 – 38 ° C, 5 Finnish saunas, Roman steam bath, Thermal Water outdoor pool with sun deck, Thermal Water Massage pools, Thermal Water Whirlpools. After free time for relax and wellness we will return to Stuttgart.
