Departing Trondheim harbor on the express boat bound for Kristiansund,you will cruise out the Trondheim Fjord, Norway’s 3rd longest fjord and animportant waterway in the Viking era. Sailing past beautiful islands andsome of Norway’s best agricultural areas, you will after an hour arrive in Brekstad on the Fosen peninsula, where you will disembark. Our first visit will be at Austrått manor. Strategically located by the inlet to the Trondheim fjord, stands the Austrått manor. Its history stretches back to the Viking Age and Snorre’s descriptionsof the Christianization of Norway. Stories in the Middle Ages tell us aboutpowerful, noble families and close links to noble men. The most knownowner, Lady Ingjerd Ottesdatter (ca. 1470–1555) was her era's wealthiestlandowner in Norway and a political intriguer. Her politics has inspired Henrik Ibsen and several other Norwegian dramatists.The layout of the manor as it stands today is from about 1656, built in theRenaissance style. However the decorations are Baroque. Our next stop will be at Austrått Fortres. The main attraction at Austrått Fortress is the enormous rotating turret.This is the only one left in the world. The turret was first mounted aboardthe German battleship Gneisenau and had 3 guns with a diameter of 28.3cm and a traversing clearance of 360 ̊. When the ship sustained damagein the port of Kiel in 1942, the decision was made to place one ofGneisenaus' gun turrets in Austrått Fort. A guided tour will bring you fivefloors down into the mountain, through the entire gun turret, the electricutility and the soldiers' quarters which could billet up to 200 men. After we will back to Trondheim.
