Route: Hanover - Fagus factory - Gustav Adolf Stave Church - Goslar - Hanover
Duration: 9 h
Firstly we will visit the Fagus factory was built in 1911 by architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and is known throughout the world as the first building conforming to the modern architectural style. The singular steel-and-glass architectural style enabled the architect to endow a medium-sized factory with an unusual appearance that broke with tradition. Fagus shoe lasts have been produced in this living monument for more than 100 years.  Since the year 2011, this architectural masterpiece has numbered among the UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites. During our visit the Fagus factory, retrace the journeys of Walter Gropius and Carl Benscheidt (the innovative founder of the company) and experience how tradition meets innovation and architecture lines up with production. Next we will visit to  the Gustav-Adolf-Stabkirche is a reproduction of the Borgund stave church built between 1907 and 1908. During a study trip to Norway, the architect Karl Mohrmann saw staves churches and, inspired by them, he decided to reproduce one in Germany, arguing that this type of church existed throughout the entire region of North Germany at the beginning of Christianization. The church is a copy of Borgund Stave Church in Norway adapted to fulfill its role as Hahnenklee Lutheran parish church. The church is named after the Swedish king Gustav II Adolphus.  Originally, missionary Vikings built the churches. They were skilled  shipbuilders, so that the architecture also includes elements of boat building. The windows in the church resemble portholes and the chandelier resembles a steering wheel. The dragon heads typical of Scandinavia are located on the roof ridge.Next we will visit  Goslar where you see what makes this 1000-year-old World Heritage Site worth seeing. Founded in 922, Goslar emerged out of mining efforts in the nearby mountains. But the town also developed an important royal and imperial connection, giving it considerable clout for centuries. You’ll know when you’ve reached the Old Town when you pass through or by a gate tower. Although there isn’t much of the town walls that once encircled Goslar, several of its medieval towers still stand. Pass through them and you’ll quickly be met with a barrage of half-timbered houses and grey slate roofs. That is the signature look of Goslar and it doesn’t disappoint. We’ll a visit to the main square in Goslar, Marktplatz. Lining each side of the square you’ll find a wonderful selection of buildings. Interestingly, very of them here are half-timbered, instead showcasing Goslar’s other style which incorporates slate shingles.  Another interesting feature of Marktplatz is the eye-catching patterns in the square’s cobblestones, which emerge from the Marktbrunnen fountain in the centre of the square. After free time we return to Hanover.
