Route: Pecs - Siklos Castle - Villany Wine Tasting - Pecs

Our first stop we will make at the castle of Siklos, which guards the southern border of Hungary, was the residence of the most important noble families in medieval Hungary. This monument reminds us of a past that is both glorious and sorrowful. The castle was mentioned first in 1294 when it was the property of the Soklyosi family. In 1387, Sigismund, the young king of Hungary, punished the family by taking away the castle and its estates, following a failed rebellion against him. At the beginning of the 15th century a fortified castle was built on the hill, with round bastions and high walls. Due to the enormous household of the Gara family, the yard was surrounded by a multi-floored, ornamented building on three sides. Its carved windows and doors showed off the family’s wealth. The arch of the chancel, the beautiful windows, the frescos and the choir are among the most important examples of Gothic art in Hungary. Next we will discover Hungary’s most famous red wine growing region. In addition to the unique features of the terroir, the soul of the wines and the charm of this wine region is given by centuries-old wine tradition, the famous Villány cooperation, the faith and work of people living here. The hills run east to west, thus the vineyards are protected from the north wind. This region enjoys the highest number of sunny hours and the warmest average temperatures in the country. The limestone bedrock, with loess and clay topsoil makes a good base for producing wines with personality. The treasures of the region include the protected streets of cellars in Palkonya, Villánykövesd, Villány, Nagyharsány and Kisharsány, the cellars and press houses scattered around in the vineyards of Siklós; hundreds of years ago they were important for their technology, now they are important destinations of the tourist industry. Traditions include the presence of Kadarka, Portugieser, or Schiller wines. There we will visit to the Wine museum where you know about local wines and the tecnologies of produce. After we will visit to two local wineries where you will see the wine cellars and test local kinds of wine. After free time we will return to Pecs.
