Route: Innsbruck - Mittenwald - Stift Stams - Aqua Dome thermal - Innsbruck
Duration: 9 h
Our firs stop in this tour will be at germanies city Mittenwald which is located along the Austrian border, Mittenwald is the home to charming cobbled streets, mountain landscapes and the art of crafting classical instruments. Visitors may feel like they are on the set of "The Sound of Music," walking its storybook lanes with houses straight out of the Brothers Grimm, all in view of the Alps. Goethe had a way with words and called this village, popular since the Middle Ages, "a picture book come alive. Once a wealthy town as a stopping point for goods going to Venice, the town was mostly frozen in time. On its main street, Obermarkt, beautifully painted façades known as Lüftlmalerei decorate the houses. Some date back 250 years, and these painted illusions add architectural elements to the otherwise plain buildings. They also tell the story of the town with scenes showing the profession of the house owner, festivals and religious vignettes. In the main square is the iconic 14th century St. Peter und Paul Church. The original structure was built in 1315 with the current design from Josef Schmuzer dating from the mid-1700s. Next stop we will make at one of Tirol’s true architectural gems is the splendid Cistercian Abbey of Stams, founded in 1273 by Count Meinhard II of Gorizia-Tyrol. Set in pristine grounds, the monumental façade is easily recognized by its pair of silver cupolas at the front, which were added as a final flourish when the original Romanesque abbey was revamped in baroque style in the 17th century (between 1650 and 1750). The exuberant interiors can be admired within a guided tour: Crane your neck to marvel at ceilings adorned with rich stuccowork and elaborate frescoes and view elaborate iron grilles in the collegiate church. Among the Monastery’s most impressive possessions are Bernardi Hall, the Chapel of the Holy Blood and the “Prelates' Staircase”. Afterwards, you can visit the Abbey's shop that offers a unique range of goods from homemade jams and honey to distinct monastic drinks and produce. Our last stop in this tour will be at ahe Aqua Dome which is a thermal spa resort found in the Austrian Alps, which is open all year round. Here there is a hotel, spa and a variety of inside and outside thermal baths. The Aqua Dome is known for its beautiful mountainous surroundings in both summer and winter. There is a total of 12 indoor and outdoor pools with variable temperatures, along with relaxing lounge rooms, a spa area with 7 different saunas and 4 restaurants and bars. There is also an area for children. It’s perfect in the winter because what’s better than lying in a warm bath surrounded by snow and mountains? It’s perfect in the summer because it’s a beautiful location to sunbathe and enjoy the cooler outside pools. After your relax we will return to Innsbruck.
